Catering to a different market

Seven months ago Andrew Mellis took the next step in his career when he joined over 120 other Mac Tools distributors and took on an automotive franchise.

Having spent nine years in the catering and service industries, Andrew was looking for a new direction in life so he could spend more time with his family. He realised one of the best ways to build a business for himself was to take on a franchise, having never previously owned or operated a business.

When it came to choosing a franchise he found the decision very easy due to a family connection, as he explains, “My step dad had just bought his own Mac Tools franchise six months prior to me making the same choice, and I saw how well he was doing and how much he was enjoying his career change.”

“I have owned my own franchise for seven months now and the highlight of that time has definitely been becoming my own boss. It is a very satisfying experience.”

Many people may be concerned that it is a daunting prospect to give up regular employment and go it alone, but Andrew has no regrets. “The business has lived up to every expectation that I had of it and more. I knew I was buying into a well-established and successful business model, but I never imagined the level of support I would get from everyone who works for Mac Tools.”

“The back-up and training I’ve received from Mac Tools has helped me hugely. It’s great to know that there is a big team behind you always willing to help in any way possible.”

Andrew is under no illusion that self-employment is an easy option, but he feels he has definitely made the right choice in his change of career. “A typical day as a Mac Man is a busy one but a great one. Starting early and being organised are the keys to a good day. I aim to be out in my van bright and early, and be at my first garage as it is opening. Owning your own business takes a lot of time and effort, but there are potentially life changing results with the right attitude and passion for the job.

“If you want to succeed as a Mac Tools franchisee it comes down to focusing equally on both your loyal and potential customers, along with good organisation and hard work. At the end of the day you get back what you put in and I’m now reaping those rewards”
